Micheal van Wyk is a Full professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Studies, School of Teacher Education, College of Education, University of South Africa (Unisa). Currently, a National Research Foundation rated scientist in economics education (NRF C2). He has more than thirty-three years of teaching experience, both at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. He was a primary and high school principal from 1999–2003. During his principalship, he was awarded a certificate for outstanding school leadership (2000) in the Northern Cape Department of Basic Education (NDBE). A former NCDBE subject advisor and moderator for school subjects in economics, accounting, and business economics. For the past 21-years, he is a highly rated and prolific writer, having published more than 72 research articles in accredited international and South African journals, read 88 scientific papers at educational conferences, and written five academic books and ten chapters in research books. He delivered several keynote addresses at various teacher education conferences. In 2013, the highest research award, the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Research at the University of South Africa, was awarded for his outstanding and excellent contributions in economics education. For his consistent contribution to teacher education (2015), he was awarded the certificate for the Best Researcher in the Last Five Years at the College of Education, Unisa. He also received an award for Outstanding Education Research Paper (International Conference, Dublin-Ireland, 2010). Prof. van Wyk is an international reviewer for several international journals as well as for South African journals. He served on several academic boards of educational science journals and several committees in the College of Education, University of South Africa. He serves on various international academic boards of journals. He co-published in 2015 a valuable textbook entitled: Educational Research: An African Approach with Oxford University Press. As a highly rated scientist, esteemed scholar, professional teacher, ethical leader, and motivational speaker, Michael van Wyk received the Medal of Honor from EASA (2022) as an acknowledgement for his immense contribution to teacher education. Currently, he serves as a mentor for the Open and Distance Learning (ODL), and Commonwealth of Learning (COL) projects entitled the ‘ODL Practitioner Research Training and Mentorship Initiative’. Prof. Micheal van Wyk is a flipped instructional designer and scholar of note. His research interests are flipped pedagogy, technology-integrated teaching and learning strategies, social media tools for the classroom, e-portfolios, Afrocentric-Indigenous pedagogy and research methodology, cooperative learning, and economics education.
