The following Biography for Gabriel was created by Dr. Robert "Bob" Midden for a keynote talk introduction. "Dr. Gabriel Matney is currently a Professor of Mathematics Education at Bowling Green State University in the College of Education and Human Development. He also serves as Vice-President for the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics and Vice-President of Publications for the Research Council on Mathematics Learning. Gabriel began his teaching career teaching middle and high school mathematics for five years in rural schools in Oklahoma, and then was given an opportunity to create a mathematics program at an inner-city school for the state’s largest district. During this time he creatively energized the mathematics curriculum of the school with connections among STEM topics. These efforts led to engaged and successful learning by his students and earned him the District’s Teacher of the Year award in Oklahoma City Schools. Gabriel went on to earn a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education and is in his ninth year at BGSU. He has actively lead 19 grant-funded projects designed to help in-service teachers create dynamic and minds-on classrooms that improve the learning of their students. He is constantly involved in school projects with many districts in Ohio, other states, and other nations. His passion for teaching and for students can be seen through his service and leadership in BGSU’s Math Camps, which have won two awards. Through his service to Math Camp, Dr. Matney advises and works alongside hundreds of preservice teachers to impact the lives of 1000’s of students across America and the world. His research centers on improving professional development for teachers and the development of pre-service teachers as professionals. Since becoming a professor at BGSU he has 42 peer-reviewed research publications, 14 invited papers to professional societies, 46 invited talks, and 10 keynote speeches given both in the United States and abroad in nations such as Australia, Chile, China, Japan, New Zealand, and Thailand. Dr. Matney loves to share knowledge about mathematics education from around the world. He has taken educators and teacher candidates on 16 study abroad courses that he designed. During these courses students travel abroad with Dr. Matney to study the intricate relationships between culture and education systems in the nations of Australia, Bulgaria, China, Crete, Fiji, Greece, Italy, New Zealand, Thailand, Turkey. In addition to his grant work with teachers in the United States, he has given more than 100 workshops across the United States, Thailand, South Korea, and Japan to 1000’s of teachers. Additionally he has served as a visiting Mathematics Education Professor for Khon Kaen University and a visiting Research Scholar for the Institute for Research and Development in Teaching Profession for ASEAN. Currently Dr. Matney is excited to be working on Lesson Study projects with schools in the United States and professors in Thailand. Those who know Gabriel know that he has a fondness for adventure. If you ask him what his greatest adventure has been, he would tell you, raising his three amazing daughters with his wife and high school sweet-heart."
